Social Media in 2010?

social media predictionsI’m not really all that big on this annual prediction stuff, but a conversation on our Blog Talk Radio show last night sucked me in. Just a little.

What are going to be the big changes in social media for 2010?

I think we’re going to see a shift from creating strategies and marketing plans to actually implementing them. Enough talk, enough prosthelytizing. What are we really going to do? How are we going to measure it? How will we make it happen? What will we do differently?

  • Well first off… i'm going to make sure to catch yall shows on Blog Talk Radio!

What is going to be one of the major changes in 2010. I think one of the biggest is going to be filtering. We thought there was alot of noise?!?! We haven't seen anything yet. With SO many different ways to produce content, someone has to help sift through the good and the bad. Companies will pop-up to be that medium. We can't get rid of the middle man in this context.

  • I suspect we will see two things in 2010 that are connected but different in important ways.

First, Social Media will become more integrated into business strategy. Now it seems the activity is being executed in isolation. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, you want to do your experimentation away from the main business, but at some point you need to get serious and figure out how SM fits in.

My second prediction is that the bloom will fade and Social Media will stop being the new shiny thing. Again, this isn't a bad thing. With less attention practitioners can focus on how to make this new communication channel a valid and viable part of marketing strategy.
