Plane Crash in the Hudson? You Might Have Heard it on Twitter First
Today’s crash of a US Airways jet in the Hudson river offers us another example of the effective uses of social media and Twitter in particular. No sooner had the plane hit the water and boats rushed to aid the victims than a passenger on a ferry headed to help took a picture with his phone, tweeted it to Twitter through Twitpic and the images were around the world in a heartbeat. This has happened many times before, ranging from Red Cross communication and volunteer sourcing during a hurricane to the recent events in Mumbai.
There’s no doubt that Twitter has shown itself to be an effective communications tool, or that Twitter and other social media communication tools are changing the way we get business done as well as play.
